Indian Man in Dubai Wins Dh1 Million in UAE Lottery After Skipping Tea

Ananth Perumalsamy, a 33-year-old Indian man living in Dubai, made a small change in his life—he gave up a few cups of tea each month to buy lottery tickets. That small change helped him win a huge prize: Dh1 million in the UAE Lottery.

For Ananth, tea is part of his daily life. “It’s something we drink almost every hour,” said the accountant from Tamil Nadu, India. He moved to Dubai in 2017 and works at a private company.

He first heard about the new UAE Lottery in November 2023 when a colleague at work mentioned it. He and 11 friends decided to join together and buy tickets. Since one ticket costs Dh50, they each put in Dh8 every two weeks to buy two tickets. That’s only Dh16 a month for each person—about the same cost as 12 to 16 cups of tea.

The group has been buying tickets for every draw since the start. Then, one night, Ananth checked the lottery app before going to bed—and saw they had won Dh1 million. “I was shocked. I didn’t sleep that night or even the next one,” he said.

At first, many of his friends didn’t believe him. Some had already gone to bed, but a few were still awake when he shared the news. “They thought I was joking,” Ananth said.

The prize money will be shared among the 12 members. Each person will get between Dh85,000 and Dh100,000.

The timing was perfect for Ananth—he’s getting married next month. “I’ll use my share for the wedding. I’ve always wanted to own a car and drive in Dubai, and now that dream can come true. I already have my driving license,” he said.

Each group member has their own plans for the money. Some want to build homes, others want to pay off debts, invest in their children’s education, or start small businesses.

Ananth’s friend Bala Murugan, who has lived in Dubai for 20 years, is also part of the group. “I’m going to build a house with my share,” he said. “We couldn’t sleep the night we found out. We kept talking about what to do with the money. I’ve never felt this happy in Dubai.”

The group hasn’t had a celebration yet, but they plan to go out to a nice restaurant soon.

When it comes to choosing numbers for the lottery, Ananth says they mostly do it randomly. Sometimes they pick numbers based on friends’ birthdays in that month. It’s become a fun group habit.

When asked what they would do if they won the Dh100 million jackpot, both Ananth and Bala laughed. “We can’t even imagine that much money,” Ananth said. “That would be enough for generations.”

The Dh100 million grand prize is still waiting for a winner—but Ananth and his friends are already feeling like they’ve hit the jackpot.
